MediHerb Golden Seal 1:5 is a single-herb liquid extract prepared from the root and rhizome of Hydrastis canadensis.
Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support upper respiratory mucous membrane comfort, normal respiratory mucus function, appetite and temporary mild digestive comfort, this 500 mL practitioner preparation provides a flexible liquid format for individualised practitioner prescribing.
Golden Seal is best suited to targeted, professionally guided use. It has a comparatively high potential for herb–drug interactions and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Long-term safety has not been established.

Warnings
For practitioner dispensing and professionally guided use.
- Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
- Do not use during pregnancy.
- Do not use while breastfeeding.
- Do not give to newborns, infants or children.
- Goldenseal contains naturally occurring berberine. Berberine exposure in newborns can contribute to harmful bilirubin accumulation and may worsen jaundice.
- Do not use where neonatal jaundice is present.
- Consult your healthcare practitioner or pharmacist before use if you take prescription or other medicines.
- Goldenseal may alter the way the body processes medicines and has demonstrated potential to inhibit CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, creating a significant potential for herb–drug interactions.
- Particular caution is warranted with medicines that have a narrow therapeutic range and medicines substantially affected by CYP2D6 or CYP3A4 metabolism.
- Consult your prescribing practitioner before combining with metformin. Clinical studies have observed reductions in metformin exposure following Goldenseal administration, although the magnitude and clinical significance may vary with metformin dose.
- Do not use this product as a substitute for antibiotics, infection testing, prescribed respiratory treatment, diabetes medication or appropriate medical assessment.
- Long-term safety has not been established. Use should remain targeted and professionally directed rather than indefinite.
- Do not place the undiluted extract directly into the eyes. Eye pain, light sensitivity, altered vision, significant discharge or persistent redness requires professional assessment rather than home treatment.
- Seek medical advice for persistent fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, worsening respiratory symptoms or symptoms that do not improve.
- Seek medical advice for ongoing diarrhoea, fever, blood or mucus in the stool, unexplained weight loss or significant abdominal pain.
- Discuss use with your treating healthcare professional before surgery, anaesthesia or invasive dental procedures.
- Stop use and seek professional advice if significant nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, jaundice, rash or another unexpected reaction occurs.
- Contains ethanol.
- Keep out of reach of children.
