About Hawthorn
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a botanical traditionally used in Western herbal medicine. This MediHerb preparation uses the leaf and flower rather than Hawthorn berries and is supplied as a 1:2 liquid extract.

Consult your doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you take medicines for the heart, circulation or blood pressure. Current MediHerb interaction guidance recommends monitoring when Hawthorn is used with antihypertensive medicines because it may increase their effects. Monitoring is also advised with digoxin because Hawthorn may increase its effect.
Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have high blood pressure, low blood pressure, heart failure, angina, an abnormal heart rhythm, a previous heart attack, unexplained fluid retention or another diagnosed cardiovascular condition.
Do not use Hawthorn as a substitute for prescribed medicines, blood-pressure monitoring, ECG testing, cardiac imaging or medical treatment.
Do not increase the Hawthorn dosage if palpitations, chest discomfort, breathlessness, swelling, dizziness or blood-pressure concerns remain present.
Do not stop or alter prescribed heart or blood-pressure medicine while taking Hawthorn unless directed by the prescribing healthcare professional.
New, frequent or unexplained palpitations should be assessed by a doctor. Call triple zero (000) immediately if palpitations occur with chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting or blackouts.
Call triple zero (000) for chest pain that is severe, worsening, heavy or tight, lasts longer than 10 minutes, or occurs with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, dizziness or pain extending to the arm, neck, back or jaw.
Seek medical assessment for new ankle or leg swelling, increasing breathlessness, unusual fatigue, rapid weight gain, reduced exercise tolerance or difficulty breathing when lying down. These symptoms should not be managed by increasing the Hawthorn dosage.
Possible adverse effects may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or muscle discomfort.
Safety information for extended use is limited. Research has not established the safety of Hawthorn use beyond 16 weeks, so longer-term use should remain professionally reviewed.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only when specifically directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.
Discontinue use at least seven days before general anaesthesia, surgery or an invasive procedure unless otherwise directed by your treating healthcare professional. Tell your doctor, surgeon and anaesthetist that you use Hawthorn.
